Guwahati, March 1, 2019:

Former Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) spokesperson Dilip Borah has assumed a new role as the Convenor of the National People’s Party (NPP) headed by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma before the all-important Lok Sabha elections.

Speaking exclusively to InsideNE, Borah said: “We have designs to take part in the Lok Sabha elections and we are discussing that. The NPP unit in Assam includes members both old and new and we are in the midst of talks with people who want to join the party, but it will take some time to decide whom to field in the elections.”

“We want to field candidates in all constituencies, but the final decision will depend on the candidates and the strength of the party”, he added.

On being asked about frontrunners, Borah said that the party is actively seeking candidates in all constituencies. “We cannot name anyone, but I am willing to confirm that we are eyeing 14 candidates. Our party wants to field candidates in all 25 Lok Sabha constituencies, and out of those, 14 are In Assam."

It is to be mentioned that the National People's Party is a state-level political party in India, though its influence is mostly concentrated in the state of Meghalaya. The party was founded by P A Sangma after his expulsion from the Nationalist Congress Party in July 2012. The current NPP President is Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma, who is often referred to as ‘Northeast hero’ for his contribution in defeating the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016.
