Assam: Student body AASU flags shortage of medicines, doctors at Jagiroad Hospital

The Jagiroad Regional Unit of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) on Tuesday, June 9, highlighted several deficiencies at the Mahatma Gandhi Model Hospital in Jagiroad following a surprise inspection carried out in response to long-standing public complaints.
 

A delegation of the students' body visited the government hospital to assess healthcare facilities and interact with patients regarding the problems they face. The team also held discussions with the hospital's Deputy Superintendent over the issues affecting the institution.
 

According to AASU leaders, the hospital is grappling with a shortage of essential medicines, irregularities in laboratory services and inadequate availability of doctors. The delegation further alleged that the hospital lacks basic facilities, including sufficient fans, causing hardship to patients and attendants amid the prevailing heat.
 

They claimed that elderly patients, pregnant women and other visitors are being forced to wait in long queues for treatment under uncomfortable conditions.
 

The students' body said the inspection exposed the poor state of healthcare services at the government-run hospital and called for immediate intervention by the concerned authorities to address the shortcomings.
 

Speaking after the visit, Manasjyoti Bhuyan, president of the Jagiroad Regional Unit of AASU, urged the authorities to take prompt measures to improve healthcare services and infrastructure at the hospital.
 

He warned that if the issues are not resolved at the earliest, AASU would launch a democratic agitation with the support of local residents.
 

The organisation said it would continue to monitor the situation and press for necessary improvements to ensure better healthcare facilities for the people of Jagiroad and adjoining areas.
