A major political controversy has erupted within the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress party, ahead of Bholanath College student elections. A section of disgruntled NSUI members has publicly accused the state leadership of violating organisational guidelines in the appointment of the new District President, Sahnoor Sheikh.
The dissent surfaced during a recent press conference where protesting members expressed outrage against the state leadership. At the heart of the controversy is the age of the newly appointed District President. NSUI rules mandate that a District President must not be above 27 years of age, but the dissenting faction alleges that Sheikh is over 30.
Members further claim that Sheikh was controversially brought in from the Youth Congress and appointed as NSUI District President, allegedly bypassing established procedures. Initially, the state leadership reportedly acknowledged the concerns of the members but later finalised Sheikh's appointment, a move described by protesters as inexplicable.
“Posts and comments made on social media regarding the protest were deleted, and some individuals attempted to silence us by posting reports on Facebook and Instagram,” one NSUI member said during the conference.
Feeling ignored by internal channels, the aggrieved members have now taken their grievances to the media, issuing a stern warning that “thousands of students will be forced to take to the streets if justice is not served.”
The internal crisis threatens to destabilise NSUI’s campaign and cast uncertainty over the upcoming Bholanath College student elections. The state leadership of NSUI has yet to issue a formal response to the allegations of age fraud and guideline violations.
