Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda on June 5 joined party leaders and workers in Shillong to mark World Environment Day by participating in a plantation drive under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's flagship ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign.
Participating in the tree-planting programme, Nadda said the initiative, launched by Prime Minister Modi on June 5, 2024, was aimed at promoting environmental conservation through people's participation and collective responsibility.
Addressing BJP workers, Nadda noted that lakhs of party workers across the country were planting saplings on World Environment Day as part of the nationwide campaign.
Highlighting the significance of the initiative, he said the campaign was dedicated to mothers in recognition of their selfless role in nurturing and protecting their children. Drawing a parallel with nature, he said the environment continuously sustains and safeguards human life, making its protection a shared responsibility.
"A mother serves her children selflessly throughout her life, and nature too nurtures and protects humanity. Preserving the environment is essential for the well-being of present and future generations," Nadda said.
The BJP president further stated that the campaign has grown steadily since its launch. After beginning in 2024 and expanding significantly in 2025, it has evolved into a nationwide movement in 2026, with crores of BJP workers and supporters participating in plantation and environmental conservation activities across the country.
Nadda said BJP leaders and workers visiting Shillong also contributed to the campaign by planting saplings and reaffirming their commitment to environmental protection.
The programme formed part of nationwide World Environment Day observances, with similar plantation drives being conducted in various states under the banner of the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign.
