Tawang poll row: PPA accuses BJP, CM Khandu of pressuring candidates to withdraw

In a sharp escalation of political tensions ahead of the Tawang District Panchayat Elections, supporters of the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) on November 29 held a press briefing near the Deputy Commissioner’s Office to protest what they described as coercive and unlawful campaign practices by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The gathering drew attention to allegations that two uncontested PPA candidates were pressured to withdraw their nominations on the final day of filing, raising concerns about the integrity of the electoral process in the district.

According to the PPA supporters, party workers and leaders of the BJP, including those close to Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, attempted to influence the PPA candidates into stepping down. They claimed that the alleged actions amounted to an “undemocratic and unlawful campaign strategy,” warning that such interference undermines the fundamental principles of a free election. The allegations, made publicly, reflect the growing unease among opposition groups as polling day approaches.

The PPA workers asserted that the developments point to a worrying pattern in the run-up to the Panchayat elections, where smaller political parties may face undue pressure from the ruling establishment. They emphasised that all participating parties must be allowed to compete in a neutral and fair environment, without intimidation or interference.

The supporters urged the district administration to ensure that democratic space is protected and that no candidate is compelled to withdraw against their will.

They also called on the Election Commission to take immediate cognisance of the matter and intervene to safeguard the democratic process in Tawang. Stressing that elections must reflect the genuine will of the people, the PPA supporters said that restoring trust and transparency is essential for maintaining public confidence in local governance.

The press briefing concluded with a renewed demand for neutrality, fairness, and strict adherence to the election code of conduct, as the district prepares for one of its most closely watched Panchayat elections in recent years.
