Fraud alert in Arunachal; Fraudsters seeking emergency money transfer hacking other's Facebook account

ITANAGAR: Amid the COVID-19 crisis all over the world, Arunachal Pradesh is experiencing online fraud some with fraudsters seeking emergency money transfers online by hacking into other people's Facebook accounts.

Tame Phassang, Mayor of Itanagar Municipal Corporation, was a victim whose Facebook account was hacked and has been requesting money from people as an emergency transfer.

Mayor Tame Phassang, speaking to the media, said that he learned this after receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be transferring the money he had sought from him via Facebook messenge.

He said that his account had been hacked and that the fraudster had used it to request money from a number of people, and some of whom had already made the payment as well.

Tame Phassang has filed an FIR with the Itanagar police station against the fraudster, along with the A/C number of the fraudster which he got from the person who contacted him claiming to transfer money to him.

Tame Phassang urged citizens not to deposit money with anyone who requests it online, as Facebook accounts are frequently hacked by hackers who demand emergency money transfers for medical reasons.

If someone is requesting money on social media sites citing an emergency, you should request a video call or inquire by calling the individual from whose account money is being demanded before being the victim of such frauds.

He also took to Facebook and wrote, "Dear Friends, Some unknown person has created a fake Facebook account in my name. Please ignore the friend request & any form of messages. I have lodged FIR against the culprit today."
