Former Chief Minister of Assam and senior AGP leader, Prafulla Kr. Mahanta on Monday took part at an anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protest at the Gandhi Mandap, where he alleged that 2.5 crore people from Bangladesh are waiting to cross the border to India.
Lamenting the recent amendment of the Citizenship Act, Mahanta said that the Bangladesh Government has said that they are being blamed of discriminating against the minorities in the country. Mahanta further alleged that around 2.5 crore 'minorities' are looking forward to coming to Assam, and added that once that comes to fruition, the people of Assam will be reduced to a minority.

Mahanta said that the Central Government is oblivious to the concerns of the Assamese people. "Dispur is not aware of the situation in Assam. Not only in Assam -- but Assamese people in all parts of the country are protesting against the CAA", he said.
Mahanta further stated that the Bill-turned-Act must be opposed at all costs as it violates the basic tenets of the 'Assam Accord' that was signed at the end of the bloody 'Assam Agitation'.

Alleging the Government of "sleeping" on the issue, Mahanta warned that if the Government refuses to listen, it could lead to civil violence. "History is testimony to that -- and we don't want that once again", the former CM said. "The BJP Government must come forward to protect the jati mati bheti of Assam, as per their slogan", Mahanta advised.
It may be mentioned here that the people of Assam have been continually protesting against the contentious Bill-turned-Act, as the region shares porous borders with Bangladesh. It has already been reported that around 40% of people in Assam are Bengali speakers, and it is believed that the latest amendment to the Citizenship Act will open the borders even further to an "invasion".
