AASU Launches Protest Against Citizenship Bill in Assamaasu

Guwahati, November 18, 2019:

The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) on Monday has partaken in the Northeast-wide protests against the allegedly 'communal' Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Guwahati city.

The student body's members, which includes students from many colleges and institutions, are staging a protest in front of the Raj Bhawan in Guwahati, and they mean to submit a memorandum to Governor PB Acharya, so that he can take the concerns of the people to the power corridors in New Delhi.

The protest, which is being led by AASU stalwarts Samujjal Bhattacharya and Lurinjyoti Gogoi, has seen many students spilling onto the streets, where they are holding numerous placards as a sign of protest.

Speaking to Inside Northeast, Lurinjyoti said, that there is "no question" of accepting illegal immigrants in the name of "religion", and urged the Centre to "understand" the issue of illegal immigrants in Assam and the Northeast.

Lurinjyoti also alleged that the Citizenship Bill in an attempt to "dilute" the Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, and the long-awaited Assam NRC, which left over nineteen lakh people stateless.

Meanwhile, the Northeast Students' Organization (NESO) is holding protests in all the Northeast Indian states' capital cities. It may be mentioned here that the member organisations of the NESO are AASU, KSU, GSU, AMSU, NSF, TSF, AAPSU and MZP.
