Two days after the Central and state governments had lowered the prices of fuel by Rs.5, petrol and diesel prices shot up yet again on Saturday.
The price of petrol in Guwahati on Saturday was hiked by 24 paise and diesel by 36 paise a litre. Petrol a litre was being sold at Rs.81.62 and diesel Rs.71.12 a litre.
On Thursday, the Centre had given a marginal relief to consumers with Rs.1.50 excise duty cut. Similarly, the oil marketing companies slashed it by Re.1. So, the overall decrease was Rs. 2.50.
Responding to the Centre’s call, all BJP-ruled states too reduced value-added tax or VAT by Rs.2.50. This gave an overall benefit of Rs.5 to the consumers. However, just two days since the relief, the prices started showing an upward trend from Saturday.
