Amit Shah congratulates "allies" UPPL on election victory in BTR

NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah today congratulated the Assam State Unit of the BJP and new allies United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) for its victory in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections.

Amit Shah also thanked the people of Assam for their "continued faith in PM Narendra Modi resolve towards a developed North East."

Shah's tweet came moments after Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal announced that the UPPL's Chief Promod Boro would be sworn in as the new Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Council after the BJP and the UPPL joined hands to topple the three-term rulers Bodoland People's Front (BPF) from power.

Responding to Shah's tweet, Boro said, "Thank you so much Hon'ble Home Minister of India, Shri Amit Shah for your warm wishes. We are so grateful to you for your kind support."

Hagrama Mohilary led Bodoland People's Front (BPF) has won 17 out of the total 40 Seats in the Bodoland Teritorial Council (BTC) election, emerging as the single largest party.

The United People's Party Liberal (12 Seats) and BJP (9 Seats) are the other strong performers. The Congress-AIUDF and the Gana Suraksha Party won one Seat each.

Over 78 percent voter turnout was recorded on Thursday in Bodo Territorial Council’s (BTC) second and final phase of polling, which witnessed police firing in the air to control a clash between BPF and UPPL supporters in Chirang district of Assam.

Till the closing of polls at 4.30 pm, 78.80 per cent of 10,23,404 voters exercised their franchise, deciding the fate of 111 candidates for 19 constituencies spread across Kokrajhar and Chirang districts.

The much-awaited voting for the BTC began on December 7 with over 77.01 per cent voters exercising their franchise in the first phase of polling for 21 seats in Udalguri and Baksa districts, where 130 candidates have contested.

A total of 23,87,422 voters in the two phases exercised their franchise to elect their representatives for the local council, formed in 2003 and elections being held since 2005.
