The protests took an ugly turn in Tripura, where acts of violence were reported from several districts of the State. In Assam, the protesters took to the streets in great numbers, and vehicular movement was severely restricted.

Tyres were burnt, and slogans were yelled by the massive number of people who had spilled out onto the streets, to stage their protest. Thousands of protesters even reached the state's capital, Dispur, but they were kept at bay by the law enforcement authorities who had prepared well in advance, anticipating chaos.

Meanwhile, the controversial legislation, which passed the Lok Sabha test at midnight, is set to be tabled by Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, at the Rajya Sabha tomorrow.
