Tinsukia, February 20, 2020:

At a time when Indian women are breaking stereotypes by not conforming to the age-old traditions of tying the knot “early” or not getting married at all, cases of child marriage have once again come to light.

An incident of child marriage has been reported from Assam’s Tinsukia district, wherein two minor girls were rescued from getting married to two men double or triple their age with the help of Child Line.

Both the parties were taken to the Tinsukia Sadar Police station for interrogation. “We have brought them here for interrogation. We have learnt that they have come from Sonari. With the help of child line, we were able to trace the two brides (girls), their mother and relatives. The grooms were of the girls’ father’s age. We have brought all of them here for questioning,” said a Police officer.

He further added, “Investigation is on and the findings will be disclosed accordingly. We have asked for the birth certificates of the girls from their mother. Only then it will be established whether they were eligible for marriage. We brought the girls from Porbotiya where they were getting ready for their marriage. The grooms were caught from Housing Colony.”

Public gathered outside the house where the marriage ceremony was supposed to take place. The angry mob condemned the families for agreeing to child marriage. “We should not let this family stay in our locality. Now that we have seen it ourselves. We will not let them stay here. They should not have taken the step of child marriage.
