Assam Police have formed a committee that will now give counseling to the police personnel who are depressed due to various reasons.
DGP Assam, Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta speaking on the issue said that a decision has been taken to following the alleged suicide of a police personnel who was posted at the Chief Minister’s residence in Guwahati.
The DGP added that a four member committee comprising of a psychiatrist or a mental expert with three top police officers will counsel police personnel who are found going through depression or suicidal tendencies.
He said, “We are trying to trace down the various reasons of depression among the police personnel and through this step we hope to treat them before they take any extreme step.”
On Sunday night an Assam police constable identified as 49-year-old Babul Chandra Das was found dead hanging to a ceiling at the Chief Minister’s residence.
Das was a resident of Patharkuchi, Pathsala in Barpeta district.
He was a personnel of the 10th Assam Police Battalion (APBn), Kahilipara. The DGP said that the reason for his suicide is yet to be known but the investigation are being carried.
Reportedly, he was a heart patient and was undergoing treatment and the police are trying to find if that could have been the exact reason for the extreme step. Earlier on February 7, a police Havildar Golap Bora had also allegedly killed himself with his service gun in Hojai.

The incident took place at the Shakardev Nagar Police Reserve which is just near the district Superintendent of Police’s office. There was no suicide note recovered from the spot but the police have suspected it too be due to a family conflict.
The police have found two empty carbine cartridges from the incident site and the investigations are still on.
