Assam man ends life as names of family members not on NRC list

Baksa (Assam), September 9, 2018:

Depressed that the names of his family members did not appear in the complete draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC), a man in Tamulpur area of Baksa district has committed suicide.

According to initial reports, the deceased, identified as Binoy Chanda, committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his house. The locals claimed he ended his life as he had slipped into depression after the name of none of his family members was included in draft NRC.

A case was also lodged against his mother at a foreigners’ tribunal. He thought he might be also declared as a foreigner; so he committed suicide, the locals said.

Speaking to InsideNE, Baksa Superintendent of Police Binoy Kalita said they were probing the death.
