New Delhi,March 6, 2020:

The grapevine reports that Assam MP Gaurav Gogoi, who was elected to the Lok Sabha from Kaliabor in Upper Assam with a thumping majority, faces expulsion from the Upper House.

The rumours started swirling after Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi said that the Government is seeking the expulsion of a Member of Parliament. Although the Cabinet Minister did not explicit name the MP whose expulsion is being sought, it has been reported that he was referring to the Assam MP.

It needs mention here that Gogoi is one among five Congress MPs who have been suspended for the remainder of the session. However, it is now being reported that the Government is seeking Gogoi's expulsion from the House. If that happens, Gogoi will have to contest re-polls to maintain his position.

Meanwhile, Gaurav has maintained a brave front even after his suspension, and has said that the Government led by Narendra Modi must be held accountable for the violent communal riots in Delhi that left of 53 people. "Suspend me, but please discuss Delhi riots tomorrow. Show your accountability towards the very people who voted for you. No matter the number my party Congress derives it’s strength from our commitment towards Bharat Mata and we will continue to seek justice from PM Modi", Gogoi wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, the Government's reluctance to hold a discussion on the riots has been met with an outcry from the opposition leaders, who are demanding that a discussion be held at the earliest.
