Assam Sahitya Sabha President Vows not to Oppose CAA in Embarrassing Slip-Up

Darrang, December 22, 2019:

Assam Sahitya Sabha president Paramananda Rajbongshi has landed in the soup after he “accidentally” said that he would never oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

The proclamation made by Rajbongshi at an event in Darrang raised many eyebrows as the Sahitya Sabha president has been a part of many protests against the CAA.

Rajbongshi was speaking at a mass protest organised by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) in Darrang district. During his speech, he said, “We will not oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the Assam Sahitya Sabha, in case of the mass protests, will always move forward with positive thinking and we urge all of you to refrain from creating any confusion over the CAA.”

When Rajbongshi was gheraoed by the people who had gathered in the protest against C(A)A, he immediately clarified that he actually had joined the mass protest to oppose the C(A)A like the previous times and that he “accidentally” said the opposite.

It may be mentioned here that the people assembled in the Darrang mass protest were eagerly awaiting to listen to the Assam Sahitya Sabha president and they wanted to know the Sabha’s stand on the contentious C(A)A. However, they were utterly disappointed with Rajbongshi’s speech, especially when he said that he would not oppose the CAB-turned-C(A)A, not once but thrice.
