Assam: Uniformed Men Plant Gun in Anti-CAA Leader's House, 'Secret Killing' Murmurs Arise

Naharkatia, February 10, 2020:

A recent video posted by a Facebook community has sparked fears that the dreaded 'secret killings' could once again begin in Assam.

The spine-chilling video that was reportedly filmed on Saturday in Naharkatia's Kukurapuhia, a small force of men in fatigues consisting of men who wore masks over their mouths, was seen entering the house of a certain Debojit Duarah around 8 pm.

Later, Ximadri Duarah, the wife of the local told the media that the men forced their way into their quarters while her husband was away. The woman has further claimed that the men who had barged into her house placed a gun in the residence, to which she responded with hue-and-cry, rousing the neighbors.

The locals gathered at the spot and the video was soon streamed live. It has been reported that as soon as a local youth went live via social media site Facebook, the troopers left in their Bolero vehicle, which shockingly did not have a numberplate.

Notably, Duarah is the President of indigenous organization Veer Lachit Sena, which has been opposing the Government's amendment of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act tooth-and-nail, and locals have alleged that this might be an attempt by those in power to silence dissent.

Reacting to this incident, All Assam Students' Union (AASU) leader, Dipanka Nath told Inside Northeast that instead of hatching conspiracies, the Government mist address the issues of the people. "Look, conspiracy is going on to curb the anti-CAA protests by the people...it has also happened in the past. However, the Government, instead of conspiring against activists, must listen to the people and find solutions to these problems."
