Guwahati, January 22, 2019:

Staging a hunger-strike near the main-gate, the students of the prestigious Cotton University on January 22 are urging the Supreme Court to rule in favour of the people of Assam and overthrow the allegedly "draconian" legislation that seeks to grant citizenship on the basis of religion. The students have also opined that the mass agitations that the state witnessed immediately after the Bill's passing would make a comeback if the Supreme Court rules against the people's consensus.

The hunger-strike is being conducted from 10 am to 5 pm -- the working hours of the Supreme Court -- and the students are raising slogans against the ruling regime.

Rahul Bordoloi, the General Secretary of the University, said: "We are trying to convey the message...the convey the consensus of the people of Assam. We live within the boundaries of the Constitution, and we hope the Supreme Court will take the request into consideration. The Constitution is being subverted by the ruling regime...and we hope they stall these efforts.."

Bordoloi also warned that if the Supreme Court rules in favour of the CAA, the mass agitations will begin again, and the people of the State will ensure that the BJP Government in Assam is voted out of power. "We appeal that the Indian Constitution be preserved and its basic tenets not be diluted...", Bordoloi added.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Amit Shah has proclaimed that the agitators can continue with their protests but the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, which has been officially implemented, will not be repealed at any cost.

While addressing a gathering in Lucknow, Shah declared, “…those who have been organizing dharna (protest) and taking out processions would not be heard and the CAA would not be withdrawn in any situation.”
