JORHAT: Atul Bora, Assam's Agriculture Minister and the President of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) party, has compared the new political parties of the state to "Bollywood item numbers."

Speaking on the sidelines of an AGP meet in Upper Assam's Jorhat, Bora said, "It is not unnatural for new election parties to pop up before the polls. Just as Bollywood item numbers do not have any connection with the rest of the movie, these parties are also mere distractions meant for entertainment purposes only. Just before elections, they will surface and there will be a lot of song and dance for the entertainment of the people. After elections, they fade away."

"None of the new regional parties can pose a threat to the AGP. The new parties have been formed with agendas -- everybody knows who has formed these parties and with what agenda," Bora further stated, without clarifying further.

Asked about the Congress-AIUDF alliance ahead of the polls, Bora said that "it won't make a difference."

"The only thing that people have come to know from this alliance is that these parties are actually allied," said the AGP supremo.

Bora also claimed that the BJP-AGP-BPF coalition has done so much work "that no party has been able to govern so well since independence."

"Look at the APSC exams, for instance. Nobody could get jobs legally in the past due to rampant corruption. Now, however, we have seen that students are clearing the exams on a legal basis," he said.

Asked about seat-sharing in the ensuing polls, Bora stated that "no talks have been held so far in this connection."

It needs mention here that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had held discussions with the AGP leaders, reportedly over the sharing of seats.
