A one day awareness camp on prevention and control of deafness was held at Tamphajao Bhavan in Thoubal Kshetrileikai on Tuesday.
The programme was organised by State Health Society, Manipur and under National Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness, National Health Mission, Manipur.
Attending the programme, ENT specialist Dr MA Sattar said hearing loss could be caused by aging, illness or disease, excessive exposure to high noise levels and trauma, which could be mild, moderate and severe.
Dr T Manihar Singh, State Nodal Officer, NPPCD, State Health Society, Manipur said a newborn could suffer from hearing loss due to heredity, rubella or other infections of a pregnant mother, low birth weight, severe jaundice following birth or other illness like meningitis.
W Ibohal Singh, former District Youth Coordinator, cautioned present day youth from frequently used loud speakers and ear phones as using these could lead to hearing loss.
