GUWAHATI: Trade and commerce are set get a major boost in Mizoram once the Bairabi-Sairang railway track project of NF Railway is completed by March 2023.
The track, sanctioned in 2008-09 is part of the Centre’s policy to connect the north eastern region through rail leading to ‘transformation of Northeast through better transportation’.
Bairabi is situated in Kolasib district of Mizoram and Sairang in Aizawl district of the same state. Bairabi is connected by an 84.25 km broad gauge line from Katakhal station in Hailakandi district of Assam.
“Better rail connectivity will lead to economic development not only of the people of Mizoram but also for the Northeast. Traders of the state will be able to bring items of daily consumption as well as construction materials at a much cheaper, cost effective and eco-friendly way. Farmers of the state will be able to send their produce to the wider market of the various states at cheaper rates and a time bound manner,” said an NF Railway statement.

The Bairabi-Sairang railway line project of 51.38km is being built at an estimated cost of about Rs 5521.45 crore and Rs 3763.63 crore have already been spent till last fiscal.
The project involves 55 major and 87 minor bridges along with five road over-bridges and six road under-bridges. A total of 12,639.20 metres of tunnelling work is also involved in the project.

A total of 487.47 hectare of land has been acquisitioned. Earth filling work of 347.89 lakh tons is being done.
There will be four stations -- Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang and Sairang – between Bairabi and Sairang.
