While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre has resolved to pass the Citizenship Bill at all costs, members of the indigenous organizations and student bodies across the Northeast, have been staging mass protests against the Bill. Taking to the streets of Tinsukia district earlier today, activists, after staging a rally, blocked the National Highways 37 and 38, as a mark of protest.

Sources told Inside Northeast that the activists were also joined in their efforts by the local public, who joined them in raising their voices against the Bill. It has been reported that local shopkeepers too joined the protesters after they had closed down the shops.

It may be mentioned here that the AASU, after an executive-level meet at their headquarters in Guwahati, have resolved to intensify the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

Slamming the Centre for “polarizing” the entire nation in the name of Hindu and Muslim, Lurin said that in Assam, West Bengal and Tripura, the Centre is trying to change the political scenario to “rule” over the area.

Gogoi also said that the Central Government has “fascist” tendencies, and is not accepting the ‘resentment’ of the indigenous people.
