Assam’s Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal seems to be losing his popularity at an unprecedented rate. The CM, who started his tenure as the ‘Jatiya Nayak’ of Assam has lost much of his popularity in wake of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill protests. Today, Sonowal addressed a near-empty venue in Golaghat where he had gone to inaugurate the Golaghat Engineering College, which had been commissioned by Tarun Gogoi’s Congress Government on 31 March 2012.

About 75-100 people were present to hear the CM’s deliver his speech at the venue, but most of the action was outside as protestors had organized a ‘Hom Yagya’ to curse the Chief Minister. Effigies of the CM had also been burned in front of the District Commissioner’s office to protest his visit to Golaghat. The Golaghat students’ union took to the streets in large numbers to protest the CM due to his support for the contentious Bill. Despite the best efforts of the authorities, protestors encircled the venue and raised black balloons and black clothes to protest the CM’s visit.
It is to be mentioned that Sonowal, who had earlier maintained silence regarding the issue, has now fully come out in support of the Bill. As a consequence, the once-beloved Chief Minister has been stripped of his symbolic title of ‘Jatiya Nayak’ by the AASU, who had earlier conferred the same on him. Moreover, he has become the bull of internet jokes and a prime target of trolls along with Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
