The Railway Protection force (RPF) of Northeast Frontier Railway has successfully intercepted the smuggling of contraband goods and recovered drug and cannabis valued at Rs. 35.49 lakhs during 20 to 26 May, 2019 in Assam.
In one such case on 20 May, a team of RPF based at Guwahati recovered 500 grams of the intoxicating substance morphine in a plastic package valued at around Rupees thirty-five lakh.
The packets were thrown away by some unidentified persons from the train no. 12423 DN (Rajdhani Express) while the train was leaving Guwahati Railway Station.
Later, the unclaimed morphine was handed over to Government railway police, Guwahati, Assam, and a case was registered at the station.
In another case of May 21, 2019, a RPF team of Hojai under Lumding division recovered four packets of cannabis weighing about 7 kgs while conducting a routine check in train no. 12526 (Dibrugarh- Kolkata Express). The recovered cannabis was valued at almost Rupees fifty thousand.
Moreover, Following a search operation, the Dhemaji district police nabbed seven drug peddlers including a minor from Leku Jelom village under Jonai police station on Tuesday evening and seized about 50 gram of heroin from their possession.
A case under NDPS act has been registered in Jonai police station and the accused involved with the drugs trade (excluding the minor) were remanded into judicial custody on the next day.
Drug smuggling remains a persistent problem in the Northeastern region of India and especially along the areas bordering Myanmar, which are some of the most vulnerable areas as far as the drug addiction problem in India is concerned.
