At least five doctors from tea estates from across Assam have resigned over security concerns after an elderly doctor, Dr. Deben Dutta, was hacked to death by tea garden workers in Teok, Assam.
Three doctors from Mariani tea estates in Upper Assam have reportedly resigned. These include Ripun Karmakar from New Hunwal Tea Estate, SN Singh from Bhelaguri Tea Estate, and Lupa Das from Kakojan Tea Estate.
The other two doctors to have resigned are -- Ravi Baruah, from Assam's Dibrugarh district, and Ajoy Kakati, from Numaligarh.
Deben Dutta, a 75-year-old doctor from Assam, died after an enraged mob of tea garden workers brutally thrashed him and damaged the property of a hospital in Teok, Jorhat.
The incident took place following the death of a 37-year-old female tea garden worker, Samara Majhi, who was undergoing treatment at the hospital.
According to reports, the 75-year-old doctor was flogged inhumanely and the workers also damaged the hospital property in rage.
The workers alleged that the incident was a result of the doctor’s negligent attitude towards their co-worker, whose death, they feel, could have been averted.
Assam State Branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) called for a state-wide withdrawal of medical facilities in the state from 6 AM of September 3 to 6 AM of September 4.
