*Assam: Former CM Tarun Gogoi honoured with Padma Bhushan*

GUWAHATI: Former Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi was presented with with the third highest honour – the Padma Bhushan, posthumously.

Gogoi, a three-time chief minister, was named for the award for his “exceptional and distinguished service in the field of public affairs”,

He passed away in 2020 owing to post COVID-19 complications and was the longest serving Chief Minister of Assam.

Apart from serving as the chief minister of Assam from 2001-2016, the veteran Congress leader also served as a minister of state (MoS) during the PV Narasimha Rao government.

Gogoi, a Congress loyalist all his life, rose from the grassroots from his hometown Jorhat. He was the face of the Assam Congress in Delhi till the late 1990s.

He represented the Jorhat seat in Parliament on multiple occasions from 1971 and was elected as MP from Kaliabor from 1991-96.

President of India Ram Nath Kovind on Monday gave out the prestigious Padma awards to laureates from across the nation for their contribution to the nation in various fields, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu.
