GUWAHATI: Sabita Rani Devi, a Doordarshan employee from Guwahati, who was clubbed on the head from behind by miscreants during her evening walk is now fighting for her life at the Indraprastha Apollo hospital in New Delhi. She was taken to New Delhi for treatment after her condition deteriorated following the deadly attack, one of her neighbours informed Inside Northeast.
The 52-year-old was reportedly walking in the evening while talking on her phone when bike-borne assailants hit her from behind with an iron rod and stole her phone.
She was initially treated at the GNRC Hospital in Guwahati, but was shifted to the Delhi Hospital due to her deteriorating condition. She is now undergoing "critical care" at the top Delhi hospital, we have been told.

Meanwhile, a video has surfaced on social media in which Devi, in a dazed state, appeals Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, to curb the anti-social elements in the New Guwahati area. "I am having to come to Delhi after I was hurt by anti-social elements while taking my evening walk. I was hit while walking by bike-borne miscreants. When I see something unjust happening near me, I speak out. And I hope you will take cognizance of the matter. There is a drugs and alcohol ring in that area," Devi has said.
"She was brutally attacked at Ganesh Mandir By Lane no. 2 during her evening walk, and the miscreants also snatched away her phone. Needless to say, this incident has created a fear psychosis in the minds of residents here as people are now afraid of stepping out of their houses," Amiya Sharma, a resident of New Guwahati locality, told Inside Northeast over the phone.
Meanwhile, Guwahati Police Commissioner has said that the local police has initiated a drive to ensure the safety of the residents of the New Guwahati area. "We have deployed personnel there and patrolling is going on. Moreover, we are conducting anti-drug drives in the area and an alert has been sounded to fish out the anti-social elements."
