Hindu-Muslim politics has to end, says AJP chief Lurin Jyoti Gogoi

RAHA: Lurin Jyoti Gogoi, the supremo of Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), one of the newest regional political parties in Assam, today claimed that the communal scenario in Assam has degraded to such a state that people are starting to introduce themselves as either 'Hindu' or 'Muslim.' "If a person is asked to introduce himself/herself, he/she will state whether they are Hindu-Muslim -- such is the sorry state of affairs. If Assam is to to run on the basis of its core ideology, it will run on the sentiment of Assamese regionalism and the Hindu-Muslim divide will no longer find a place here," he said at a party rally in Raha in Nagaon district.

Gogoi further lamnbasted the ruling party's leaders for stating that they don't need votes for Muslims to win the election. "The Constitution has secularism as one of its core tenets; how can they say that they don't want votes of the 35% of people?," Lurin said.

Vowing to follow the ideas set down by Srimanta Sankardeva and Azan Fakir, Gogoi claimed that the BJP-led Government has resolved to divide people along communal lines. "However, whenever people ask question the Government about their developmental agenda or schemes, they are distracted with religious propaganda and demonization of 'the other'."

Thanking the people for their "love", Gogoi said that if they do not vote for a regional party, the BJP will continue to divide society along communal lines.
