Horrors of 1983 could return to Assam if CAB is not scrapped, says Lurinjyoti Gogoi1983

Guwahati, December 6, 2019:

Lurinjyoti Gogoi, the General Secretary of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), has warned that the horrors of 1983 could be repeated in Assam if the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is not scrapped by the Centre.

Speaking to Inside Northeast, Lurin said that the situation in Assam could spiral further out of control if the Bill is not scrapped as it is a threat to the "identity" of the people of Assam. Lamenting that external cultures are trying to impose their cultures over that of the Assamese, Lurin also said that Assam is under threat '"politically" as well as "culturally". "Therefore, a 1983-type of situation will come because it is a question of the identity of the indigenous people of Assam", he added.

The AASU leader further added that already Assam is "marginalized", and the Assamese language, culture, and civilization is under threat and a "fighting struggle" is the only choice left to the people of the state.

Slamming the Centre for "polarize" the entire nation in the name of Hindu and Muslim, Lurin said that in Assam, West Bengal and Tripura, the Centre is trying to change the political scenario to "rule" over the area.

Gogoi also said that the Central Government has "fascist" tendencies, and is not accepting the 'resentment' of the indigenous people.

Resolving to 'intensify' the agitation against the CAB, Lurin further stated that the student bodies under the umbrella of the Northeast Students' Organization (NESO) have been protesting against the Bill, and will continue to do so.
