As part of the ‘Save Tree and Riverfront’ campaign organized in Guwahati’s Machkhowa area, residents of the city came out in fear of the possibility of destruction of Sankardev Park, a portion of Azan Pir Park. The park forms an open space of the riverfront between Bharalumukh and Kalipur.

It is to be mentioned here that a bridge will be constructed over the Brahmaputra connecting North Guwahati with Bharalimukh behind Sonaram Higher Secondary School under the initiative of the PWD and GDD departments. The PWD (Road) department has begun work on the bridge.
Following this, the Coordination Committee of Citizens of the West Guwahati area has submitted a memorandum to PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressing the issue. The committee mentioned that it does not object to the construction of the bridge, neither they want to create any hindrance in the developmental projects in the city.
However, they have demanded the inclusion of the Environment Management Plan (EMP) in the project for compensation of any destruction of the natural environment.

They also urged the Minister to redesign the construction of the bridge in such a way that no destruction is caused to the Park, the existing fauna in the area and the co-existing bird habitat. They also demanded that the government should appoint a technical committee with all the stakeholders from different fields to bring out a possible solution.
It may be mentioned that the degradation of the environment has become a global issue. In India, Delhi has been facing a serious heat of environmental degradation. The pollution level of the state also has made records.
