Locals of Kapalkata and nearby villages in Sonapur, Kamrup (M) have warned panchayat election candidates to stay away from their villages for campaigning until and unless a concrete bridge is constructed over the Makar Beel in Kapalkata.
The villagers stated that they were fed up of the “false promises” that the candidates from various parties make during campaigns but never fulfil them. “We won’t vote till we get a concrete bridge”, the villagers said in unity.
One of the locals added that over the past 30 years they have been crossing the “beel” through a bamboo bridge that needs to be reconstructed every year. The bridge is constructed by the villagers themselves without taking any money from the government or public representatives.
The villagers this year have decided to boycott the elections because each year candidates come asking for votes and promise them a concrete bridge but once voted to power, the representative forgets the promise and never take any step on the issue.
“We will be forced to chase away candidates if they try to enter our village without the bridge being constructed”, another old-aged local added.
