BJP’s controversial Hojai MLA, Shiladitya Deb, alleged that the names of genuine Indian citizens, particularly Bengali Hindus, were excluded from the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) as part of a conspiracy.

“People who did not make it to the NRC list have become foreigners overnight. This happened because there was a conspiracy hatched against them,” Deb alleged.

“The names of lakhs of Bangladeshi Muslim immigrants have been included. AASU (All Assam Students’ Union), KMSS (Krishak Mukti Sangram Samitee), AGP (Asom Gana Parishad) etc are silent on it because they have accepted them. So, when they have accepted them, I have nothing to say about the Muslim immigrants. But when the names of the Hindus got excluded, they remained silent. What does this mean? Does it mean that they are not bothered about the Muslim immigrants?” the MLA asked.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh reassured that the names of no genuine Indian citizen would be left out of NRC.

“The NRC is being updated in Assam. This was done as every Indian has the right to know who is a genuine Indian and who is an illegal immigrant,” Singh said at a programme in New Delhi.
