GUWAHATI: Congress MLA Rakibul Hussain on Friday slammed the BJP led Assam government for its decision of delivering liquor to homes.
On the fifth day of the Assam Assembly, Rakibul Hussain criticized the decision stating that violence against women has gone up because of the consumption of liquor by men. He said because of the easy availability of liquor during the lockdown, many people have started torturing their wives in inebriated conditions.
Rakibul Hussain asked the government why it can’t deliver vaccines home instead of liquor.
“Why can’t the government deliver vaccines home when they can take initiative for liquor delivery? We wanted data on how many vaccines does the state need to fully vaccinate people above the age of 18 years and by when the process would be completed. But we didn't get data on that.” MLA Rakibul Hussain said.

It needs mention here that the Assam government has allowed online, sale, purchase, and home delivery of liquor in Guwahati on a trial basis. This decision has drawn wide criticism from opposition MLAs as they feel that the government should concentrate more on covid vaccination drive than alcohol consumption.

Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika said, “Assam Cabinet has decided that liquor will be sold online in Guwahati for a month on an experimental basis. If it succeeds, we will expand it to the entire state.
Health Minister Keshab Mahanta has said that a formal government notification will be published soon and the detailed guidelines will be finalised by the state excise department.
Earlier, the Meghalaya Government had approved a new rule for providing licenses for home delivery of liquor by wine shops in the state.
