The police, probing the killing of SBI deputy manager Junu Sarma on the outskirts of Guwahati, suspect that the attack was carried out by “contract killers or hit men”. However, so far, they have not got any success in the case.
Sources said based on the allegations made by Sarma's husband and also preliminary investigation, the police suspect the prime suspects in the case were "unknown employees" of the victim’s SBI Dadara branch. They were allegedly involved in suspected financial anomalies.
That Sarma was the assailants’ target was evident from the fact that they had spared the life of her car driver Pranab Kalita, the sources said. Kalita told the police that he was asked by two motorcycle-borne men to stop the vehicle and when he slowed it down, they took out a gun and shot at the bank officer. He could not recognise the faces of the assailants as it was dark and they were wearing full-masked helmets.
The police have questioned all employees of the SBI, Dadara branch. It is suspected that some of them had nexus with money-lending mafias in the area.
