Supreme Court Registers Case Against Citizenship Act Filed by AASU

Guwahati, December 13, 2019:

All Assam Students Union (AASU) on Friday filed a case challenging the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill at the Supreme Court.

AASU chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya made the announcement about the development during the 11- hour hunger strike staged today at Assam Engineering College (AEC) playground.

Addressing the gathering Sammujjal Bhattacharya said, “On Thursday evening, AASU president Dipankar Nath and general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi rushed to Delhi and through all the legal proceedings, the case against the Citizenship Amendment Bill was filed.”

Turning down heavily on the BJP government, Bhattacharya added, “Today, President Ram Nath Kovind signed the Citizenship Bill and on this day itself, we have successfully registered a case challenging the contentious Bill at the Supreme Court.”

It is to be mentioned here that over 50,000 people gathered in Guwahati’s Chandmari field to join in the 11-hour hunger strike of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) in opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

Artistes, students, elderly people, all were seen joining in the gathering on Friday to protest against the CAB that cleared the Rajya Sabha tests and became a law. People gathered in the Chandmari field to extend their support to save Assam from the influx of undocumented non-Muslims from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.

The government has imposed curfew in Guwahati following massive protests post Rajya Sabha’s clearance of the Bill. The internet has also been suspended. People of Assam, young and elderly, have taken to the streets with “We will not accept CAB”, “Jai Aai Axom”, slogans.
