Supreme Court Seeks Centre's Reply on Petition Seeking Doctors' SafetyThe Supreme Court of India

Guwahati, September 8, 2019:

The Supreme Court has sought a reply from the Central government based on a petition filed by the Association of Healthcare Providers India (AHPI) that demanded measures to ensure the protection of medical professionals.

The petitioner also sought amendment of a law to protect the doctors against any violence in hospital, medical facilities, and clinics.

The notice seeking a reply from the centre after hearing on the petition has been issued by Justice NV Ramana and Ajay Rastogi.

The petition has been filed after the brutal assault on Dr. Deben Dutta who was killed in Teok of Assam.

73-year-old Dr. Deben Dutta from Assam, died after an enraged mob of tea garden workers brutally thrashed him and damaged the property of a hospital in Teok, Jorhat.

The incident took place following the death of a 37-year-old female tea garden worker, Samara Majhi, who was undergoing treatment at the hospital.

According to reports, the 73-year-old doctor was flogged inhumanely and the workers also damaged the hospital property in rage.

The workers alleged that the incident was a result of the doctor’s negligent attitude towards their co-worker, whose death, they feel, could have been averted.

The Police, reportedly, rescued the doctor from the hospital around 4 pm. He was critically injured and referred to the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, where he succumbed to the injuries.

A magisterial inquiry has been initiated to look into the matter. Locals and hospital authorities have demanded immediate action in the case.

Similar incidents have occurred earlier, especially in the tea garden areas. The doctor community has, time-and-again, expressed concern over the rising assaults on on-duty doctors. Earlier in 2019, a similar incident was also reported from Dibrugarh’s Russel India’s Dikom Tea Estate. After a tea-leaf plucker named Jhalo Surjan had died in a thunderstorm, the laborers had thrashed a doctor named Pravin Chandra Thakur.
