The Assam unit chief of Trinamool Congress Dipen Pathak resigned from the party on Thursday protesting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s alleged controversial remarks over draft National Register of Citizens (NRC).
“Mamata Banerjee made the offensive remarks to gain political mileage in West Bengal ahead of next year’s Lok Sabha elections. She never raised the burning issues of Assam at the national level. As an Assamese, I was hurt over what she said. So, I decided to quit the party,” Pathak said.
Pathak’s resignation follows resignation of two other TMC leaders – Diganta Saikia and Pradeep Pachoni – during the day.
The leaders said they were disappointed with Banerjee’s remarks of “civil war” and “bloodbath” in the backdrop of non-inclusion of about 40 lakh individuals from the NRC draft.
