Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday has once again spoken out against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and said that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) will turn into wastepaper if the Bill is implemented. He also who is CM Sarbananda Sonowal to reject NRC.

Addressing the media here, Tarun Gogoi said, “The NRC was prepared based on the Assam Accord. But, the BJP has thrown it away as it is bringing the Citizenship Bill. They are saying that the Hindus should not worry and the persecuted migrants will be given citizenship.”

Gogoi added, “There is no record of persecuted migrants entering in the state now. Earlier, there was the movement during the partition and they were provided with the refugee card and a colony was set up for them. But now, there is no such refugee movement. Not even 100 refugees have entered.”
Denying any refugee movement during his reign and even former CM Prafulla Kumar Mahanta’s rule, Gogoi further questioned CM Sarbananda Sonowal, “Who are you to reject the NRC?
The former CM said that only the Government of India has the authority to reject the NRC that was prepared with an expenditure of Rs. 1,600 crore. “The exercise lacked necessary attention and now, they want correction in the NRC,” he added.

Further, the former CM also termed the “Howdy Modi” event as a "huge gimmick" by PM Narendra Modi and US President Donal Trump. He also compared Modi’s acting skills to that of Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan and said Trump is also not far behind.
