Guwahati, March 16, 2019:

Now that the Election Commission has made it mandatory for aspiring Lok Sabha candidates to advertise criminal records at least three times on media, the politicians with criminal records must be worried as this means they have to spend a lot of advertising money on publicizing their foul deeds.

AIUDF leader Badruddin Ajmal too has had criminal cases filed against him. Ajmal's case under IPC Sections 120(B) (criminal conspiracy), 153(A)(B) (promoting enmity between different groups, imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration) 109 (abatement) has been taken cognizance of by Kokrajhar chief judicial magistrate in 2012. The case against him was filed by a person S I Islary alleging that provocative speeches were delivered in Bodoland Territorial Council areas instigating Muslim people to retaliate and inflict atrocities.

Thus, as per the new Election Commission directive, Ajmal is supposed to advertise the criminal case against him, but it remains to be seen to what extent the AIUDF leader advertises his alleged wrongdoings before the election begins. It is to be mentioned that the elections in Assam will be held in three phases on April 11, 18 and 23.

National Election watch is an NGO which has been compiling lists (including the criminal history of MPs) and Assam state coordinator of the NGO has stressed that these lists, which expose the background of the political candidates, are important.
