Assam: Executive Member of Kamtapur Autonomous Council arrested on forgery and corruption charges

The Bongaigaon police arrested three persons including the Executive Member (EM) of Kamtapur Autonomous Council (KAC) for forging the signature of the Principal Secretary in order to release the work permit.

Addressing the media, Bongaigaon SP said, "The Principal Secretary Dhrubajyoti Das of the KAC has lodged an FIR claiming his signature have been forged on a work order...upon investigation, it was found that two persons from Bijni identified as Pankaj Das and Chinmoy Sarkar are the mastermind behind the fraud case."

Further, the SP confirmed that Pankaj Das had been arrested from Guwahati while Chinmoy Sarkar surrendered himself to the police on September 17.

While investigating the case, the police seized the bank accounts of the duo, and it was found that there had been a monetary transaction of around Rs 1 lakh to the EM of KAC from Chinmoy Sarkar's account along with that an amount of Rs 3.5 lakh has also been given to him by Chinmoy Sarkar.

The entire fraud case encircles the trio by promising work orders to at least five companies which are not under KAC's jurisdiction.

One of the companies which are based in Uttarakhand, one from Delhi, one from Sikkim and the remaining two from West Bengal has been promised work orders.

The police also confirmed that the EM of KAC, Kartik Chandra Rai has been arrested and two more persons have also been identified with the entire fraud case.

The police said that the amount of money involved in the scam is worth Rs 25 lakh as per the online transaction, however, the offline transaction has been kept on hold due to the ongoing investigation.
