A devastating fire spread through the Jamjam Market Complex situated along Old Station Road in Sribhumi town late on Friday night, gutting at least 15 godowns and causing widespread panic among locals.
The blaze, which is believed to have ignited around 12:00 AM, swiftly engulfed a large portion of the commercial hub. In addition to the destroyed godowns, several retail shops were also severely damaged. Preliminary estimates place the financial loss in the range of several crores of rupees.
Eyewitnesses reported a state of chaos and confusion as towering flames illuminated the night sky, triggering fear among traders and residents in the vicinity.
While there were initial allegations of a delay in the arrival of fire tenders, the swift and coordinated efforts of the fire department ultimately prevented the fire from spreading to the adjoining larger market area.
Ten fire engines from multiple stations were rushed to the site, and after nearly four hours of intense firefighting, the flames were brought under control by around 4:00 AM.
Authorities suspect the cause of the fire to be an electrical short circuit, though an official investigation is underway to confirm the exact origin.
