Assam school faces disruption as illegal coal trucks flout traffic ban in Ledo

Sister Nivedita High School in Ledo faces ongoing disruptions despite a recent ban on commercial vehicles during school hours. On January 18, 2024, Margherita Sub-Divisional Magistrate Preeti Kumari issued a notice prohibiting commercial vehicles from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm near the school under Section 133 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

However, the school community reports that coal-laden trucks continue to flout this ban, causing safety concerns and disrupting education. Kumar Chetry, headmaster of Sister Nivedita High School, expressed frustration over the lack of enforcement.

"We have filed numerous written complaints with local authorities, but illegal coal trucks keep passing during school hours, endangering our students and staff," Chetry stated. He described repeated instances of formal inspections by officials that failed to address the ongoing issue.

"After school hours, they can continue with their business but during school hours, it is disturbing," he added.

The situation has escalated to the point where Chetry warned of potential school closure if immediate action is not taken. He appealed directly to Parikshit Thoudam, Margherita Sub-Divisional Officer, for stricter enforcement against violators.

Attempts by India Today NE to reach officials at the Margherita Sub-Divisional Administration for comment were unsuccessful.
