Assam's Chapar observes 12-hour shutdown demanding permanent closure of liquor shop

Normal life was affected in Assam's Chapar town on June 9 as various organisations enforced a 12-hour shutdown demanding the permanent closure of a liquor outlet operating in the area.

The bandh, called from 6 am to 6 pm, received widespread support from local residents, with markets and business establishments in Chapar remaining largely shut throughout the day.

The protest was directed against an IMFL ON Shop operating under the name Hrishi Restaurant in Ward No. 5 of Chapar. Local organisations and residents have been demanding the permanent closure of the liquor outlet, alleging that its operation is against the wishes of the community.

According to protesters, strong opposition had erupted on the very day the liquor shop was opened a few months ago. Following public protests, the Excise Department had temporarily sealed the establishment. Subsequently, several organisations launched a series of agitations, including strikes, demonstrations and a national highway blockade, prompting the district administration to intervene and order the closure of the outlet.

However, local organisations alleged that efforts are now underway to reopen the liquor shop. The move has triggered fresh resentment among residents, who claim the reopening is being pursued despite widespread public opposition.

The renewed attempt to operationalise the outlet has led to growing tension in Chapar, with protesters warning of further agitation if their demand for its permanent closure is not met.

Authorities have yet to issue a fresh statement on the matter. Meanwhile, local organisations have reiterated their demand that the liquor shop remain permanently shut in the interest of the community.
