Himanta Biswa Sarma on Dhing rape case: Police firepower enough, no need for new law

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stated that there is no need for new laws to tackle crimes against women, as existing laws and police firepower are sufficient.

Speaking to the media, CM Sarma said, "In Dhing and several other places these kinds of atrocities on women are happening, earlier an incident took place where miscreants sprayed and tried molesting a woman. The first thing is after the Lok Sabha election, certain sections of people have increased such activities, Secondly, in Dhing atrocities are happening to Hindu people here so that they are bound to leave their homes and sell off their property and after reviewing the incident I assure stringent action will be taken against the accused."

Meanwhile, responding to a question regarding West Bengal's CM's letter to PM Modi seeking stricter laws against rapists,  to this Himanata Biswa Sarma said, "Action should be taken by the CM of the state, why a new law should be needed. There are laws. Police have pistols in their hands, machine guns. Why do you need a law again?"
