Assam's southern district Hailakandi is the worst hit in this year's first wave of flood with over two lakh population affected.
Of the 331 villages, 231 are reeling under flood waters with the major rivers Katakhal, Dholeswari and Barak flowing above the danger level. Among the four revenue circles, Lala, Algapur and Katlicherra are badly affected followed by Hailakandi.
1423.15 hectares of cropland are under water affecting 22,996 farm families. 316 people’s marooned persons have been evacuated by SDRF and NDRF personnel. 216 persons have been rescued in worst hit Lala revenue circle and 100 in Algapur. Assam Rifles is kept on standby mode to deal with any emergent situation.
The district administration has opened up 87 relief camps accommodating 54,364 inmates. Officials of the administration and concerned departments are overseeing the relief and rescue operations. GR items like rice, dal and salt are being distributed to the affected people by the district administration.
There is no shortage of foodstuff with the district administration as it was headed by Deputy Commissioner Adil Khan keeping close liaison with the top echelons at Dispur and officials of Food Corporation of India. Public Health engineering department is providing drinking water to the affected people and Health Department has put up medical camps at different locations.
Fodder is being provided to the livestock by the Veterinary and Animal Husbandry department. Over two lakh animals and poultry have been affected by floods.
