Meghalaya Women Living in Assam Excluded from Final NRCmeghalaya

Guwahati, September 2, 2019:

According to reports, many women from Meghalaya, who were married to men from Assam, were left out of the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) draft, which was published on Saturday.

Lamenting this, Rajabala legislator Azad Zaman has alleged that this step taken by the Assam government has made the indigenous and bonafide Indian citizens stateless overnight.

According to Zaman, earlier when the draft NRC was published, it was found that documents submitted by Meghalaya women were rejected.

He stated that after a meeting between the Assam and Meghalaya Governments, it was decided that if the documents submitted by Meghalaya women were verified and countersigned by an appropriate authority, the documents would be accepted.

The women had submitted documents to the Meghalaya government for verification. However, even those documents were allegedly rejected by the Assam Government.

Comparing the Foreigners' Tribunals to Nazi-era concentration camps, the legislator Zaman further said that the Meghalaya women stand a chance of being declared as 'foreigners' outright in the Tribunals where they now have to file appeals.
