Life in the Northeastern state of Tripura has come to a screeching halt on Thursday after a 'bandh' called by the Congress party against 'police brutality'.
The Tripura Congress on Wednesday had taken out a rally against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. However, Tripura police charged the peaceful rally with batons and attacked the demonstrators. During the lathi charge, several Congress leaders, and three journalists --Mihir Sarkar, Milton Dhar and Bapi Acharjee -- were injured.
According to reports, normal life in Agartala, and other parts of the state, has been severely affected due to the 'bandh'. There is very little vehicular movement in the state, and trains also remain suspended, a source told Inside Northeast.
The Congress has called for a 'bandh' after the 3-days long strike by regional parties against the Citizenship Amendment Bill that was called off yesterday.
Shops, business centers, and institutions have been closed down in response to the strike. The Tripura University and MMB State University have also cancelled all examinations till Friday, and internet and SMS services have been snapped.
It may be mentioned here that last night, the Movement Against Citizenship Amendment Bill (JMACAB) leaders met Tripura CM Biplab Kumar Deb. After the meeting, they have withdrawn their indefinite strike protesting after the CM's assurance that he will discuss the matter with Central Government.
