Agartala, November 2, 2019:

In a shocking incident, a rape victim was thrashed by the villagers at Srimantapur village of Sonamura subdivision in Sepahijala district of Tripura on Friday.

The victim was hospitalized and a case has been registered by her at the Sonamura police station. Her statement was also recorded by the Chief Judicial magistrate of Sepahijala district on Friday.

The victim also stated that after being raped, she got pregnant and gave birth to a baby son on October 8 at Sonamura hospital. The lady also alleged that her newborn son was killed by the accused's wife and other relatives.

The victim said that her husband has been working abroad since the last three and half years and she used to stay home alone. Taking advantage of that, her neighbour Anwar Hossein (38) raped her several times. When she became pregnant, she complained to the village Panchayat, but the local Panchayat found her "guilty" according to the Shariyat law.

The victim alleged that her husband returned home half a month ago, but the locals pressurized him to divorce her.

After she delivered a baby son on October 8, She alleged Anwar’s wife and some other relatives took that baby from her and threw the baby into the Gomoti river.

She alleged that on Friday morning she was dragged from her home, tied to an electric pillar and beaten mercilessly. She alleged that Anwar Hossein, his wife Saleha Khatun, Akter Hossein, and Roushanara Begum had thrashed her. After all the cruelty, they even chopped off her hair.

Later, police rushed to the spot and rescued her. It has also been alleged by the victim that the main culprit, Anwar Hossein, was arrested by police, but he was released on Friday.

The Officer in charge (OC), Sekhar Bhattacharjee of Sonamura police station said that the victim was sent to Sepahijala district Chief Judicial magistrate court and her statement was recorded. On the basis of her statement, police registered a case against four people, Bhattacharjee said.

On Saturday, police arrested three accused Anwar Hossein, his wife Saleha Khatun, Akter Hossein and produced them in front of the Sonamura Court in Tripura.
