Tripura Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma today wrote to renowned industrialist and chairman of Tata trusts Ratan Tata seeking his assistance in order to fight the global pandemic COVID-19. Dev Varma in his letter mentioned that the state of Tripura required some assistance from the part of everyone to fight the novel coronavirus, which had been declared as a pandemic by the WHO.

The Deputy Chief Minister also included a requirement draft where he mentioned that the state of Tripura needed not less than 100 ventilators 50,000 personal protection kits, 1 lakh N95 masks, 50,000 bottles of alcohol based hand sanitizers and 500 makeshift tents to attend the adult patients.

"It has been a testing time for the entire world to cope up with the effects of COVID-19 outbreak. The situation solicits contribution from every from every possible side to hold us together. Tata trust has been a pioneer organization in stepping up for the situations like this", his letter reads.

Speaking over the issue, Dev Verma said, I have written to Shri Ratan Tata, the chairman of Tata Trust for helping us in our fight against corona virus. Shri Tara is not only the most respected industrialist but also a philanthropist, who is playing a significant role in the development of our nation through the various activities of Tata trust. We look forward to his assistance at this crucial time."

Notably, the state government has already sought 20 ventilators to the Central Government. Right now, there are 17 existing ventilators in several hospitals of the state.

Health Secretary Dr Debasish Basu said, 20 percent essential items of total requirement has reached us through the cargo flights of Air India. Yesterday, altogether 7,431 N95 masks, 33,056 triple layer masks and 549 PPE kits landed in MBB airport.

As of now, he added, more then 5,000 people have been kept in isolation and near 50 people have completed the 14 days stipulated period of isolation. Sources in the department informed that a new isolation unit would start in IGM hospital Agartala from next month.

It may be mentioned here that only a few days earlier, on Match 28, Tata trusts, taking cognizance of the immense threat faced by the world community in the wake of the outbreak of the coronavirus or COVID-19, has pledged a sum of Rs 500 crores to aid in India’s fight.

“The current situation in India and across the world is of grave concern and needs immediate action. The Tata Trusts and the Tata group companies have in the last risen to the needs of the nation. At this moment, the need of the hour is greater than any other time”, the group wrote in a statement that was undersigned by Chairman Ratan Tata himself.

Now, the Tata Trusts has pledged a sum of Rs 500 crores for personal protective equipment for the medical personnel on the frontlines, respiratory systems for treating increasing cases, testing kits to increase per capita testing, modular treatment for infected patients, and knowledge management and training of health workers and the public.
