Tripura University Vice-Chancellor VL Dharurkar was relieved from his post on Saturday, after a sting operation exposed him allegedly taking a bribe.
In the sting, the vice-chancellor was shown taking a bribe from a Kolkata-based printing firm for a contract worth Rs 60 lakh. However, Dharurkar has vehemently denied the reports and claimed that the clip is a doctored one.
A source told Inside Northeast, "Recording taking bribe is sting. And later, it was circulated on social media platforms. However, he has resigned citing that he was receiving death threats after the footage of him allegedly taking a bribe was circulated on social media. That is his official statement."
The ousted VC has alleged that the former Registrar in charge of the university, Shanit Debroy, is behind the entire incident. He accused Debroy of using the media to malign his image.
He said that somebody from Kolkata wanted to donated Rs 30 lakh to the Tripura University, but this was edited in the video, and it was doctored in such a way so as to make it seem like he was taking a bribe.
It may be mentioned here that the sting was exposed by a news platform called News Vanguard, before being picked up by various national media platforms.
